1979
Serge Gainsbourg writes songs for Bijou, Shake and Alain Chamfort (including the hit "Manureva").
Serge is the first white artist who engages the famous rhythm section of Peter Tosh, Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass), which has also already played with Jimmy Cliff and Gregory Isaacs. Later, Sly and Robbie will also play with Ian Dury, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger.
The album Aux armes et caetera is recorded during five days in the Island studios in Kingston (Jamaica). Like always, when the executive at Phonogram asks him, if everthing is ready, Serge boldly lies, writes half of the songs in the plane and the other one during a sleepless night as he is used to do.
Around Sly and Robbie there are Sticky Thompson (percussion), Mikey "Mao" Chung (keyboards) and Radcliffe Bryan (guitar), all three of them from the band of Peter Tosh. 1 April: Release of the reggae album Aux armes et caetera which eventually makes platin after six months, first time Serge makes it really big! In the TV broadcast Top club dimanche Serge sings the title track "Aux armes et caetera", a reggae version of "La Marseillaise".
1 June: Michel Droit writes in Le Figaro Magazine. He thinks the hymn is insulted by Gainsbourgs reggae version and that Gainsbourg has done his fellow-believers a bad turn, i. e. the Jews, les youpins, the Jewish race: "Quand je vois apparaître Serge Gainsbourg je me sens devenir écologiste. Comprenez par là que je me trouve aussitôt en état de défense contre une sorte de pollution ambiante qui me semble émaner spontanément de sa personne et de son oeuvre, comme de certains tuyaux d'échappement sous un tunnel routier..." During the following months, Droit maniacally repeats his polemic.
June: After a concert in Epernay (Serge sings "Les papillons noirs" and "Des vents, des perts, des poums"), a concert in Mogador and a third at the Palais des sports in Lyon, Serge appears with Bijou at the "French Rock Mania" festival in Paris.
December: Serge plays his first live concerts after 14 years, a series of shows at the Palace à Paris with is Jamaican musicians. The premiere is attended by Karl Lagerfeld, Aragon, Roland Barthes, Yves Mourousi and Rudolf Nureyev.
The same month Michel Droit writes in Les nouvelles littéraires:
| Si "La Marseillaise" est notre bien commun, cela ne signifie pas qu'il soit permis à tel ou tel, qui la considère aussi, d'en faire ou d'en laisser faire ce qu'elle n'est pas. Par exemple, au moyen de phrases pêchées ici et là dans ces couplets, de la transformer en une sorte de salmigondis posé sur une mélodie et des rythmes à la mode venus d'ailleurs, ponctué par un choeur de nymphettes marmonnant une parodie de refrain, ayant pour évident propos de la tourner en dérision.
Mais cela signifie plus encore. A savoir qu'il n'est permis à aucun d'entre nous de faire oeuvre commerciale aux dépens d'une Marseillaise qu'il reconnaît comme son hymne national, c'est-à-dire de s'enrichir avec la totalité ou les débris d'un chant sur lequel on peut frémir, se battre, mourir, que l'on peut également ignorer, contester, refuser, mais dont on ne saurait tirer profit sans devenir une sorte de proxénète de la gloire acquise et du sang versé par d'autres. 1980
Publicity campaign for Bayard clothing: "Un Bayard ça vous change, n'est-ce pas M. Gainsbourg!". Serge writes texts for Julien Clerc, Sacha Distel, the Martin Circus and Jacques Dutronc (album Guerre et pets).
4 January: A concert of Serge Gainsbourg in Strasbourg is canceled after there is not only a threat of bombing the event but also some sullen paratroopers start rioting.
5 January: Serge plays two triumphant concerts at the Cirque Royal in Bruxelles.
March: Publication of Gainsbourgs parabolic tale Evguénie Sokolov, the story of a flatulent (f)artist.
August: Jane leaves Serge and takes her daughters Kate (13 years) and Charlotte (9 years) with her.
15 September: A dispatch of the Agence France Presse (AFP) says: "Gainsbourg et Birkin se séparent."
17 December: Premiere of the movie Je vous aime (directed by Claude Berri) in Paris. It includes Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Serge Gainsbourg, Alain Souchon and Jean-Louis Trintignant. Serge has also composed the soundtrack.
27 December: In the French TV show Stars, Serge and Catherine Deneuve sing "Dieu fumeur de havanes".
1981
Serge Gainsbourg writes texts for Alain Chamfort (among them the hits "Bambou" and "Chasseur d'ivoire"), Alain Bashung (album Play blessures) and composes the album Souviens-toi de m'oublier for Catherine Deneuve.
Spring: 21-years-old Bambou enters Serge's life. She is a grandchild of General Paulus, the German commander in Stalingrad 1942-1943.
8 September: Catherine Deneuve and Serge Gainsbourg sing "Ces petites riens" in the German TV show Bananas.
November: Release of Serge's second reggae album Mauvaises nouvelles des étoiles, recorded in Nassau (Bahamas).
At 1 PM on French TV Antenne 2 Serge shows up with a beautifully blackened eye. He is the guest of Philippe Labro. The night before, around 4 AM after leaving the night club L'Elysée-Matignon, he met three guys who didn't like two of his most recent songs: "Ecce homo" and "La nostalgie camarade", in which the paratroopers are ridiculed. The three guys started heavily beating up Serge. Says Serge: "J'écris des chansons qui sont des aggressions. Quand je la trouve dans la rue, c'est normal." And of course, Serge proudly wears the sign of the paratroopers in the buttonhole!
13 December: Two years after the scandale about "La Marseillaise", during an auction in Versailles Serge buys the original manuscript of "La Marseillaise" (alias "Chant de guerre de l'armée du Rhin") composed by Rouget de Lisle.
1982
January: In the middle of Michel Polac's TV show Droit de réponse, Serge Gainsbourg displays a long pink rubber balloon which comes out of his pants like a monster genital.
23 May: In the TV broadcast Enquête sur une vie d'artiste, a portrait of Gainsbourg by Pierre Desfons, Gérard Lanvin looks for traces of the artist.
End of the year: Serge directs the movie Equateur in Gabon (Central Africa).
1983
17 August: Premiere of the movie Equateur in Paris, the second film directed by Serge Gainsbourg. It includes Barbara Sukowa, Francis Huster, Jean Bouise and René Kolldehoff. The movie has been booed at the film festival in Cannes...
October: Two Gainsbourg albums appear at the same time: Jane Birkin's fourth album Baby alone in Babylone, and Isabelle Adjani's debut album Isabelle Adjani (retitled Pull marine for the CD edition in 1987).
1984
Serge Gainsbourg shoots a series of TV commercials, among others for the lemonade Gini, the cooking machines Faure, the woollen goods Anny Blatt, the shampoo Palmolive and the tennis shoes Spring Court.
11 March: Serge Gainsbourg is invited for the TV broadcast 7 sur 7 and gives cold sweat to the moderators Jean-Louis Burgat and Eric Gilbert, before the catastrophe comes along... Asked how he celebrates his birthday, he answers: "Par une cuite, comme tous les jours"... Then he gives a very personal meaning about the events of the day, mixing the sex, the "cul" as he says, and politics, suggesting that the Soviet head of state Yuri Andropov has died because of drinking too much Polish vodka! When the two journalists try to talk about the delicate subject of the income-tax, he answers with humour. And suddenly brings up that the state is taking 74% of what he earns, taking a note of 500 Francs out of his pocket and burning it with the flame of his Zippo...
June: Recording of the album Love on the beat in New York with Philippe Lherichomme and Billy Rush as producers. Among the musicians are: Stan Harrison (the current saxophonist of David Bowie) and the Simms Brothers singing backing vocals.
Octobre: Release of the album Love on the beat. After little more than a month over 100'000 copies are sold.
27 October: "Love on the beat" is televised in Sex machine, the broadcast of Philippe Manoeuvre and Jean-Pierre Dionnet (Les enfants du rock).
1985
Frédéric Soacher directs Requiem pour un fumeur, a short film for Belgian TV in which Serge Gainsbourg explains:
La fumée vient de la cigarette, comme l'orgasme vient de la femme. Voilà, on tire les filtres et les cigarettes. J'aime pas les femmes filtres. Je pense que je préfère la cigarette à la femme, c'est elle qui brûle le plus. Faut brûler ce qu'on a adoré, hein? Je brûle ce que j'ai adoré. Ch'ais pas quoi faire de mes mains... en privé si, bien sûr! Y'a des filles qui sont blessées quand on baise avec une cigarette au bec et d'autres que ça ne dérange pas. C'est le repos du guerrier. La meilleure cigarette est la première de la journée et la cigarette après la baise. Evidemment quand on a la classe comme Gainsbarre, on fume aussi pendant... pendant qu'on se fait faire quelques... Je peux pas m'en passer j'adore ça! J'adore ça! Est-ce qu'on connait un plaisir aussi fulgurant que fumer une tige? Moi, j'arrête de fumer toutes les cinq minutes. Voilà! Y'a pas de plus grand plaisir. Les claquements du Zippo, ça en fait partie. L'orgasme dans la gorge, puis le rejet. En fait, je n'aime plus ça. Mais j'en ai besoin comme l'oxygène. Est-ce que vous aimez l'oxygène? On aime pas l'oxygène. Mais quand vous en manquez vous étouffez. Quand j'étais un petit gamin, j'étais fauchman, je les fumais jusqu'aux derniers millimètres. Maintenant, ch'uis écoeuré, je les arrête à trois centimètres. Mais quand j'étais gamin, je les fumais jusqu'à ce qu'elles me brûlent les doigts et les lèvres. Et là est le poison. C'est quand toute la nicotine et le goudron sont là. Je pense que, physiologiquement, il y a des allergies. Il y a des rejets dans l'organisme. Des gens plus ou moins atteints par les goudrons et la nicotine. Et puis d'autres comme moi qui tiennent le coup. Enfin, je sais pas jusqu'à quand. Y'a des mecs qui ont arrêté de fumer, ils sont morts trois semaines après. J'ai déjà enterré trois cardiologues. I drink to that! Vous savez comment il appellait ses clopes Humphrey Bogart? "Coffin nails". Et je traduis: des clous de cercueil!
16 March: Olga Ginsburg dies, the mother of Serge Gainsbourg.
7 June: Serge participates in Patrick Sabatier's Jeu de la vérité; live he signs a check of 100'000 Francs for Médécins sans frontières.
7 August: Jane Birkin makes a long interview with Serge for the TV broadcast Je t'aime... moi non plus by Bernard Bouthier.
19 September - 27 October: Serge Gainsbourg plays several concerts at the Casino de Paris. The Simms Brothers sing backing vocals.
1986
5 January: Birth of Lulu, son of Bambou and Serge Gainsbourg.
5 April 1986: In his TV show Champs-Elysées Michel Drucker presents Whitney Houston to Serge Gainsbourg. While the female singer murmurs a polite flourish, the male singer clearly declares: "I'd like to fuck you!" Consternation on the plateau. Drucker blushes, Whitney Houstien turns green... "Qu'est-ce qu'il dit? Qu'est-ce qu'il dit? Il doit être complètement ivre pour dire de telles horreurs", gasps the pop star in English. "Il vient simplement de lui dire qu'il aimerait lui conter fleurette", stammers the desperate Drucker. But Gainsbourg insists: "Pas du tout, j'ai dit que j'aimerais bien la baiser!" Panic on the plateau: Drucker wants Gainsbourg to apologize, Whitney Houston still gasping "He wants to... He wants to...", and the old provocateur who adds with pleasure: "Attention, je n'ai pas dit que je voulais la baiser pendant l'émission... mais après!" As an apologize, Serge sings "Vieille canaille" with Eddy Mitchell at the end of the show.
Serge Gainsbourg meets the punk rock band Zéro de Conduite at the festival "Printemps de Bourges".
10 December: Premiere of the movie Charlotte forever in Paris. It is the third film directed by Serge Gainsbourg. It includes Serge and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Roland Dubillard, Roland Bertin and Anne Zamberlan.
12 December: Death of Alain Pacadis, nightclubber and journalist. Deadly pale, Gainsbourg arrives inat the funeral with his Rolls, a bunch of black orchids in his hand.
26 December: Dispute between Serge Gainsbourg and Guy Béart at Bernard Pivot's TV broadcast Apostrophes, about the theme: "La chanson est-elle un art mineur?"
