 Von 1982 bis 1984 war Gottschalk Moderator der im ZDF-Vorabendprogramm laufenden Musikshow Thommys Pop-Show, in der Musikvideos aktueller Hits gezeigt wurden. Neben neun knapp einstündigen Folgen gab es im Dezember 1983 und 1984 im Abendprogramm jeweils unter dem Titel Thommys Pop-Show extra ein großes Pop-Festival in der Dortmunder Westfalenhalle, bei denen viele Musiker und Bands live auftraten. Fortgesetzt wurde dies von 1985 bis 1992 unter dem Titel Peters Pop-Show mit Peter Illmann und dann bis 1993 als ZDF Pop-Show mit Kristiane Backer.
