b. 11 March 1945, Detroit, Michigan, USA. This fluent, mellifluous guitarist was one of several young aspirants learning their skills in Chicago blues clubs. A contemporary of Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield, Mandel was a member of both the Charlie Musselwhite and Barry Goldberg blues bands, before moving to the west coast in 1967. His debut album, Christo Redentor, was released the following year. This wholly instrumental set, which included contributions from Musselwhite, Graham Bond, and the Nashville musicians later known as Area Code 615, is arguably the guitarist's definitive release, but Righteous and Baby Batter are equally inventive. Between 1969 and 1971, Mandel was a member of Canned Heat wherein he struck an empathy with bassist Larry Taylor. Both subsequently joined John Mayall for USA Union and Back To The Roots before the guitarist formed the short-lived Pure Food And Drug Act. He also remained a popular session musician, contributing to albums by Love and the Ventures during this highly prolific period. Mandel continued to record his stylish solo albums throughout the early 70s, and collaborated with Don "Sugarcane" Harris in Pure Food And Drug Act. He was one of several candidates mooted to replace Mick Taylor in the Rolling Stones. The results of his audition are compiled on the band's 1976 album, Black And Blue. This dalliance with corporate rock was Harvey's last high-profile appearance. In 1985 he signed a short-lived recording deal with the newly founded Nuance label. Two subsequent releases on other small labels appealed only to his loyal following. The release of the 2-CD box set The Mercury Years once again directed us back to Christo Redentor, a modern classic of psychedelic wanderings and widely regarded as his finest moment.
