Die Schallplattenfirma Gramophone Company Ltd wurde 1898 als "The Gramophone Company" (ohne Ltd) in London gegründet. 1899 änderte sie ihren Namen in "The Gramophone Company Ltd", 1900 in "The Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd" um. 1907 wurde der Name "The Gramophone Company Ltd" wieder angenommen, der bis 1973 weiter benutzt wurde, obwohl die Firma 1931 mit der britischen Columbia Graphophone Company Ltd zur Electric and Musical Industries Ltd / EMI fusionierte und längst als EMI Records Ltd fungierte.

The Gramophone Company Ltd und ihre diversen Schwestergesellschaften (u. a. Electrola) sind weltweit mit Ausnahme des amerikanischen Kontinents und Japans die Rechtsinhaber des His Master's Voice-Labels und -Bildzeichens (siehe auch HMV, Nipper) aufgrund eines Abkommens mit der Victor Talking Machine Company (siehe Victor), das 1907 geschlossen wurde und gegenseitigen Matrizenaustausch festlegte, der bis 1953 bestand.

The Gramophone Company Ltd expandierte in den ersten dreissig Jahren enorm: 1901 importierte sie aus den USA Grammophon-Einzelteile, die sie zusammenbaute, und aus Hannover Schallplatten (siehe Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft). Daneben kontrollierte sie Vertriebsfirmen in Frankreich und Italien und besass ein Aufnahmestudio in London. Schon 1908 wurde die bis heute bestehende Fabrik in Hayes, Middlesex, eingeweiht. Bereits 1914 besass die Gesellschaft fünf weitere Fabriken in Europa und eine in Kalkutta. Damals war ihr grösster Absatzmarkt in Grossbritannien, gefolgt von Russland (22 % ihres Umsatzes) und dem Deutschen Reich (20% ihres Umsatzes). Durch die gegenseitige Beschlagnahme des feindlichen Fremdvermögens verlor The Gramophon Company Ltd ihre Geschäftsanteile an der Deutschen Grammophon Gesellschaft, die bis 1949 im Deutschen Reich bzw. der BRD die Rechte am His Master's Voice-Bild- und Warenzeichen besass.

In den 1920er Jahren kontrollierte die amerikanische Victor unter Eldridge R. Johnson die Gramophone Company (siehe RCA Victor). 1925 gründete man eine neue deutsche Tochter, die Electrola. 1935 waren wieder alle amerikanischen Geschäftsanteile in britischem Besitz.
