US #44, US R&B #5) aufnahm. Ihre Single Cry to me (1963; US #23, US R&B #10) wurde dabei vom Originalproduzenten Bert Berns produziert.

<!-- at 17 she left home to pursue a performing career, briefly apprenticing under R&B star Big Maybelle before eventually landing in California, cutting the 1960 single "Taking Care of Business" for the Douglas label.

Sansu Records veröffentlichte insgesamt zehn Betty-Harris-Singles, von denen jedoch nur Nearer to you (1967; US #85, US R&B #16) ein kleinerer Hit wurde.

Already a hit for labelmate and occasional duetting partner Lee Dorsey by the time she got to it circa 1968, Betty Harris did the only thing she could with “Ride Your Pony” – she got a hold of it and rode it into the ground. Even funkier than The Meters’ version of it, and that’s saying something. This woman had all of New Orleans’ soul’s energy.

Harris: "That's how dumb I was! I was just a country girl, I had no idea how powerful this guy was."

Harris: "Otis had passed. Bert had passed. Babe had passed. I looked at this business and said maybe this isn't what God wanted me to do. I came out of high school with such high hopes, and as much as I loved singing, I just did not find things in the world the way I thought it was. I had to find me."

Bereits 1975 hatte Clive Anderson in seinem Buch Soul music geschrieben: "[Harris] has a good claim to soul supremacy [...] She is quite simply the best soul singer caught on wax today."
